This thing seems really neat-I almost want to buy one just to mess with it, but realistically I'm not going to code anything for it, so I'll just wait until the commercial devices (cheaper with better displays) are available. Still, could be the second coming of VR that actually sticks. I forget-does this have any relation to the one that Carmack was working on?

I was trying hard to justify the dav kit. Comes with doom3. That's worth $50. But I also won't be making anything so it's hard to justify.

As long as it incorperates with current 3d HDTV ill buy one for sure.

Hey Now, Oculus Rift the VR Head Mounted Display or HMD is getting a ton of buzz right now. Check out the reaction videos below to get an idea of what people are seeing. The inventor is a 20 year old genius from Cali who had a huge kickstarter last year raise 2.6 millions dollars to help manufacture the development kits in China. I knew about the kickstarter and was skeptical about the tech so I passed! nooooooooo!

Oculus can only produce approx. 6-8k units per month and have about 20k+ sold to early buyers. This is only a developer model, but it can run a ton of demos being developed as reported on http://www.riftenabled.com/. The commercial version of this tech will be released sometime in 2014. I will not be getting my developer Rift until August\September, These will run on Mac or PC and I am sure the new gen consoles will be jumping on board in 2014.

These Oculus Rift reaction videos are the best, I love when Mom's freak out. The link to pre-order the VR headset is below, $300 bucks shipping in August now. I got my order in last week!

Hey now, just popping in to say, if you ever saw the movie "The Matrix" when one of the crew jacked into the Helicopter and was flying it? The Oculus Rift allows you do that! The Heli simulator is my favorite by far! You fly around an Island and Warship and your brain will be tricked into actually believing you are there. You will actually get motion sickness if you bank too fast or drop your altitude. When you look down you see your body as the pilot, when you look behind you, the crew member will startle you! When you look down when flying past the island, you will see the blue ocean whizzing by your chopper, its all quite surreal :)

In my 30 years of gaming, this is the fricken motherload people, no joke. Any flight simulator on the PC created in the last 20 years has just become obsolete! Here is another post by another flight sim enthusiast:

Re: This has been the best demo for me so far. Helicopter.

I've been a home cockpit flight simulator enthusiast for several years now. I've experimented with many different multi-display 3d platforms (200 degree 6 foot wrap around screen with 3 projectors, the "inside cockpit display" using the TOOB idea, the "outside canopy display" using the FREX idea, multiple HMD's, 8 simultaneous monitor setups, and a 73" rear projection tv...all with and without head tracking). This demo, with the Rift, has completed the "immersion" factor and "suspension of disbelief" that I and many other flight simulator enthusiasts have long been awaiting. What you've created will demonstrate that the Rift has the potential of finally bringing to the home user what only high end military and commercial users have had access to until now. The Rift has been hyped for FPS's, but I believe there is immediate potential of the Rift with flight/racing simulation. I would like to see more movement in this direction, so THANK YOU VERY MUCH for this awesome display of cutting edge technology! (keep the updates coming...

Lucky I could not wait and picked one up on eBay last week. The commercial model will most likely have twice the resolution and head tracking built in to detect when you get closer or further away from an object in the 3D world. Estimates are saying a release date in Mid 2014 to year end Christmas 2014. Dude, do not wait to get this piece of history. If you are flight simulator nut, or enjoy playing FPS, then pick it up now. Valve has jumped on the VR bandwagon and already officially supported TF2 and Half Life 2 with the Rift. These games look and play awesome even in the lower resolution of 1200x800. The developer forums are releasing demos every day that you can try and play right away. Steam has over a dozen game developers including new games to be released in 2013 with rift support. If you game, then you need this bad!

I'd be using this for racing, grand turismo on ps3. What's the hookup on these? Just an hdmi? Is it 3d, or just very immersive?

I'd prefer a full 3d experience rather then a 2d screen, or does this really matter?

The rift currently is a prototype and works on the PC with the SDK created by the company. PC games are getting retrofitted to support the Rift via drivers being created by 3rd Party companies. A list of compatible and ongoing projects can be found here -> http://www.riftenabled.com/admin/apps/

It connects to your PC via HDMI or DVI and is pretty easy to get going. It has a resolution of 1200x800 or 600x400 per eye. Its capable of stereoscopic 3D and its actually does this quite well. The 3D player for the PC found here -> http://www.3dtv.at/Index_en.aspx supports the Rift, so you can use your HMD as a 3D movie player. You need a decent video card to get the most out of the demos to achieve 60FPS. Currently the Rift is not compatible with consoles. Hopefully one the big boys gets smart and licenses this tech for their console!

Yeap the poor dude who was killed was a programmer who helped create the SDK developers are using to create games. Pretty sad, but the hardware creaters and core team are still intact and making things happen.

oh man.. I've been trying not to think about this thing. I bought a Sony HMZ-T1 a while back. It's pretty cool but lacks head tracking.. AND was 3x the price. This thing looks amazing

Still going to wait for the commercial version, but this sounds really cool. By then there should be some great software.

Have you tried the guillotine demo yet?

The guillotine demo is cool, but there are way better demos being developed. Half Life 2 is also fully immersive in the Rift, I can only play for 30 minutes at a time before I get queasy :) Once you start using VR you need to build your "VR legs" slowly until your brain gets used to being in this virtual world. Crazy stuff!

Mirror's Edge would also be really cool on the rift.

We need a emoticon for having your mind blowen. I had never thought about this for a pakour platform game... That could get really interesting.

Paul I bet there must be quite the learning curve for getting your "VR legs". They'll have to put a motion sickness warning on the box. May cause vomiting.

Hey guys I tired out Mirror's edge tonight using a 3rd party API to make it play on the Rift. Head movement is tied into the mouse look so right away it's not gonna be a great experience. Valve with HL2 has separated your head from your gun hand movement to make it feel real and immersive. I am just gonna wait for Valve to retrofit Portal 2, that's gonna be insane!

I can play now about 45 min in HL2 before I get the Rift nausea, you need to stop ASAP and shouldn't even attempt to play through it, you will just start to feel worse. I did that my first day and had to spend two hours recovering in bed! No joke! Apparently talking out loud helps slow it down (breaks your brain from the immersion) when you feel it coming on and ginger ale also helps.

FYI, the boards are lighting up how people with potential mental illness should stay away from the rift as it may accelerate a break with reality and make that person freak out! That's gonna be a hell of a warning sticker boys!
