Game 64! Tale of a Fateful Trip
ColorDMD is excited to announce that Gilligan's Island is the 64th game to be supported by the ColorDMD multicolor pinball display platform!
ColorDMDfirst teased a Gilligan's Island release back in September 2014, only to later reveal the actual title was Indiana Jones.
At the time we thought we were being clever. It had become rote for new title announcements to be greeted with jeers from expectant Indiana Jones owners. So why not have a little fun by announcing a title that we knew would be soundly derided, but also happenedto include the letters for INDIANA, waiting to be unveiled?
We thought we dropped some obvious clues by choosing an outrageously offensive color scheme, while both highlighting and casting the colors for INDIANA with the trademark orange gradient.
However, if we've learned one thing in this business it's that pinball fans are unpredictable and we definitely weren't prepared for the disappointment from Gilligan owners when the trick was revealed. Despite some hopeful pleas to actually make good on Gilligan,we were stuck. There was no way to make the large LCD screen fit early WPC backboxes.
Entering 2017 with our new LED display, we thought we might have it made... Eric Priepke owned Gilligan, was ready to color it, and found a way to mountthe LED in the backbox. Yet we ran up against another problem... we discovered some new quirks in early WPC video that needed to be worked out.
However, good things come to those who wait[take heed ST owners!]and finally, three years later, we're able to bring Gilligan more colored pineapples and coconuts than you can shake a stick at!
Gilligan's Island is Eric's twelfth ColorDMD title release, following CP, NF, TFTC, JY, RBION, TWD, TDK, SMVE, SM, IM, and the Flintstones. He's been tearing through the remaining WPC line up this year, and there's still more to come!
The ColorDMD LED display for Gilligan's Island pinball machines shares the same easy-to-install hardware platform as previous ColorDMD releases. All displays ship withthe factory installed SIGMA ROM that supports WPC, WPC95, SAM, Whitestar, and SPIKE platforms. Multicolor operation is enabled through download and installation of a game-specific color ROM file, available from our site. ROMs can be changed at any time, allowing use with any of our supported titles.
Displays are shipping now from our store site or through our distributors. The color ROM for Gilligan's Island pinball machines is targeted for release by Friday, September8!
