Looking for ideas on how to build a backlit frame from a quick trip to home depot ;)

I guess I will have to go to Ikea as well as they have cool LED strips for the backlight :)

Has anyone here done this?

- Mirror clips
- 1 or 2 long strips of 1 x 1 or 2 x 2
- miter saw
- can of spray paint (I used flat black)
- wood screws
- finishing nails
- black calk :FP:
- carpenters glue
- LED strips
- black construction paper or bristol board

It would be nice if the LED strips were battery powered...avoid the ugly cord hanging down

Yup! You can buy LED strips that work with any 5, 9 or 12v power source. They're also sticky-backed. :)

I just bought some rolls of warm-white to do some cabinet lighting in the kitchen.. :D

Yup, take measurements of your glass.. use the miter saw to cut your wood strips with 45 degree angles, put glue on the one end of two pieces of wood and nail / screw them together. Repeat with the other two pieces, and then again with your newly formed corner pieces so you have a square. Make sure it's nice and squared up.. once that glue dries over night you're screwed! lol

Paint / stain / lacquer your wood frame.

Cut your black or silver backer board to size

Attach your lighting as desired

Glue down your backer with black calk

Lay your glass down on the frame and secure it with the mirror clips. These are usually held on with screws I believe

Gently run black calk around the edge of the glass (between the glass and the wood frame) and run your finger over it to smooth it out and clean it up.

Once everything is done you're ready to hang it! I'd suggest a strong frame hanging kit.. you can get these pretty much anywhere.

The purpose of the black calk (aside from sounding funny) is to block the light from bleeding out of your creation. Also no wood is perfect, so it'll hide the imperfections.

Nothing here is permanent, but I recommend only locking the glass down once you're happy with everything else as it's obviously the most irreplaceable part of the puzzle. :)

Here's what I came up with.. not a backglass, but it's a 4' x 6' 3D Spiderman billboard my brother-in-law gave me. I applied the same principal to it -- as you can see, I haven't put my backer board on yet, so you can see what I'm talking about with the light bleed
