If you were to bring a U-haul full of machines into Canada, what can Canadian customs do? They don’t necessarily understand collecting. Can they do anything if they suspect you may resell?

Resell or collecting makes no difference. You will pay tax on value upon import. The days of BS vales of 1000$. CBSA looks up values.

I just brought two games over and the first question they asked was “what are you going to do with them?”

They normally go based on the receipt to determine the value. You pay 13% tax on the Cdn equivalent of the value. If you run a business, you can likely get the tax down to 5% but I understand there is more paper work as a business. Someone else can provide those details. A business wouldn't care whether it is 5% or 13% as they get it back anyway when they file their GST returns as an ITC.

I brought a TZ back from the US but it was back in 2010. The guy I bought from printed off the Craigslist ad for me and put down the price and his contact info. I was prepared to pay tax on it but the amount was faily low so they just sent me on my way iirc.

When you say a U-Haul full of machines are you talking a small trailer with 2-3 or a 26' moving van with 20-30? If it is the latter expect them to possibly dig a lot deeper into what you are doing and why.
