So I mentioned I was going to be getting a Hakko FX888D for my birthday (Oct 25th) from my wife. Well she ordered me one online. This arrived today. Notice anything odd?

So I opened up the box, and this is what I see;

So I open up each individual box and this is what I see;

My wife ordered 1. They shipped 1 box containing 4 FX888D. We were only charged for 1 unit. The first thought to go through my head is "Sweet! I can sell 3 of them and fund my USC".

What would you do?

I would call Hakko and ask if I could exchange the 3 FX-888D for 1 FR300 and they cover all shipping :p

I'd contact them and see what they want to do. You may be surprised by the response. Was it ordered from Hakko directly?

On the other hand, your honesty may also result is some shipping/receiving worker losing their job.

Tough call

It was ordered through Active Tech. Active orders their stuff from Newark and marks it up a shit ton to cover the cost of a brick n' mortar store. It was probably someone at the Active Tech Distribution Center that made the mistake.

If I don't call, then no one gets in trouble and the spare units will be written off the next time they do inventory. If I do call then someone gets in shit (Lord knows how many times they've done this).

I would think they will probably ask me to return the additional units to the local store here in Ottawa or they might send me a pre-paid return box, but I'm guessing they are not set up for that. They might ask me to ship it back and they will re-imburse me. The money for shipping, not any of my time running around.

What to do, what to do...

I would keep them. Sorry. Don't even think about it. I would also offer one to Brock to use as a raffle prize.

I'm thinking about it. I'm all about honesty, but karma still owes me a few paybacks. Bah, who am I kidding... I'll call them tomorrow and see what they want me to do. As long as they don't have me driving around the city I'll be okay with it. Oh, but that doesn't mean I won't hint at the FR300. :)

Watch me return the 3 extras only to have mine break a month after owning it.

My largest conern as someone who purchases large amounts of goods weekly is exactly on point with Drano here.

This is simple and obvious IMHO. I would call them without hesitation, explain the shipping error and ask them what they want to do.
I believe that honesty and good reputation goes a long way in life. And, I sleep better at night!

... my two cents...

Regards,
- Sylvain.

Sylvain is 100% correct and I agree with him.

However, as a business owner, I realize my responses above (and my responsibilities) to employees, suppliers and clients make me "rethink certain scenarios" that otherwise were and should be "simple"; but in actuality are quite complex.

Karma will be smiling on you tomorrow...

Pinball Karma will smile on you regardless of your "decision".
It will do so "because" of your actions in "asking + thinking".

All the best my friend.
You do have a tough choice Tim.

You will make the right one.
Cheers. Salut. All the very best.

I had to call them twice, but finally talked to someone. The customer service rep. was familiar with what the box looked like and also mentioned they have someone new in the warehouse. I could hear the guy rolling his eyes over the phone. I'm pretty sure I just got the warehouse worker in super deep shit. The customer rep. is going to email me a pre-authorised UPS return form for the extra 3 units. All I have to do it print it out, stick it to the box and call UPS for a pick-up.

He didn't offer me anything in return, and I didn't ask. I thought he would have at least offered me a discount off my next purchase seeing as I am returning $300+ worth of goods to them. I guess I'll have to live with knowing I did the right thing.

Hopefully the person who made the mistake will just get a warning and chalk it up as lesson learned so he won't make the same mistake again. Good job FiftyQuid!
