I just put a PinSound in my GnR.

Amazing.

This is one upgrade that really changes the machine. Data East has always been stereo. But the songs are no longer tinny and crappy. lol

And there are 2 sound file choices. I went with the older original one and it sounds great. I get bored I will change to the other.

Worth $339 .....a must have?

or just something different?

I need more info from somebody who's actually using it. Do I have to be a computer wiz to get this to work? It looks pretty complicated on the software side.

From the website video for GNR, I only heard a couple of different sound samples on there besides the song changes, I don't know if this would justify it for me at the surface level. I could see if your original soundboard was fried beyond repair - especially for the repair challenged, but the original software for this game is pretty bad ass as is....

Check it out for yourselves:

Do tell more....

Easy to install. Just remove sound card and install PinSound board. Data Easts are stereo already. For other systems there is some configuring to do. But again sounds simple.
Plug and play - you download the sounds from computer to USB in a zip file and plug that into board and machine takes care of the rest.
The only real issue was fine tuning the volume control on the machine. The sound cuts out until you get the "dial" on the pin in the right position. But there's lots of information about that online - it's a DE issue.
You find and download the files on PinSounds forum. For GnR there were 2 choices.

Worth it is subjective.

My GnR is right beside ACDC and the sound from ACDC blew it away. And I never liked the song samples on the GnR pin because they don't mesh with the albums I listened to all that well. Especially Night Train. And honestly Aint Goin' Down sounds sucky.

I installed the original game sounds into the board first. And it was better with more base and clearer. But it was still the same "pinball songs" from GnR . If you've played GnR you know what I mean.

Soooo with the PinSound files you can choose album songs installed (depending on which file you download). I chose another file that retains the GnR pin sounds with the album music. And it replaces Ain't Goin' Down with Out Ta Get Me - so the pin isn't 100% family friendly (fine for me). Coma is better too.

Took an hour for the pin to load the file from the USB - then off and running.
And it's waaaaaaaaaaay

better.

For me.

Louder, cleaner sound and more/different songs from the album. More fun. Same as ACDC sound.

There are some things I don't like in the second sound files. So eventually I will get the software and goof around with making my own version keeping the sound effects that I like and songs that I want. I think you are right Bally Boy in that the software is more complicated - but we work on pinball machines. So how hard can it be? And there is support - people are doing crazy stuff with this. I'm in (obviously - lol).

But for right now it sounds better and to me is more entertaining.

And hell the glass on the machine cost 300 bucks.

Thanks! Great information there..... makes sense based on what you're saying.

Strange that your AC/DC is right beside your GNR.... mine is too and the DE sound really never bothered me a bit.... it's probably due to an updated speaker kit. ALL games sound better with these in my experience....

If your glass costs $300, I'm going to have to say, I think you got ripped off to the tune of about $260.......;)

The problem I've found with GnR sound is the amount of compression DE had to use to get everything packed into the ROM's they had available at the time, which is what Goodmanners is likely talking about.

The best way to describe it is loading up your mp3 player with songs using 128K bitrate or less and being ok with it, until you decide to try loading an album up using a 320k bitrate... night and day difference. Adding a speaker kit is one thing, but when the source material quality is crap no amount of better speakers is going to solve the issue.

I'd be more interested in loading in a song by Pedro the roadie... at least then there is a reason for him to have his own plastic in the game! ;)

I always wondered why this plastic has Steven Tyler, Axl, Duff, Joe Walsh and Pedro the Roadie (could be John Bonham?)

Yeah Monkeybug - you can replace all the sounds: jingle, music, sfx, voice

I don't think I've ever heard a song by Pedro the Roadie.

I did put Locomotive on the machine as it rocks.
