You cradle a ball for too long on your Metallica? I have to check when I get home but I have some of these which I ordered before to have on hand when I had a bunch of Stern pins. If I have them you are more then welcome to have them.

Yep, common problem with Stern's these days, yea if you have one it will finally give me an excuse to swing by :p

Always install the IRL540 in place of the 20N10L, it's a better part. (just make sure you don't use the IRF540!)

D

I don't think Metallica uses IRL540

I got two off Wong, putt he first one in, blew the fuse on my flipper and then the coil locked on.

Took the second one, put it in, flipper was dead again with no voltage at the coil.

I also checked the resistance on the coil and its the same 4.3 ohms that is listed on the wrapper

Took a look at the transistor I took out, the part number is nothing close to the IRL540 or even the 20N10L

I've contacted Stern to find out what it should be, I can't find the part list int he manual anywhere.

So the number on the transistor is:

BUK9529
100B
PEM1249 A6
3606

Well keep both transistors you grabbed off me because they will for sure work and the proper replacement part # for your older Stern Whitestar games like LOTR and TSPP. I wonder when they changed the part because I know Brock replaced a transistor on his XMen LE after I blew it up by cradling a ball.

The BUK9529100B should be interchangeable with the IRL540, so either you've mucked up installing the new FET or you've got another issue somewhere else.

D

Not sure how I could be mucking it up at this point, with the my new Hakko Fr300 desoldering is a breeze, takes 30 seconds at most and the transistor falls right out.

Just because you have the right tools doesn't mean you've troubleshot the issue correctly. If the new FET is failing after install, there is another issue somewhere else.

You could have done a poor soldering job during install and maybe a small short somewhere? Maybe a short somewhere else? Did you replace the diode?

There is no diode on the coil, but I didnt replace the diode on the board no

So before I bother replacing the diode now, do I need a new transistor.

Ive already tried installing both so if they are both fucked now I guess I need new ones?
