Opto switch alternatives/mods?

You cannot test a receiver like a diode because it's not. The LED is.

Best place for this locally would be SB. I'm not sure if GTB used the same style as BLY/WMS or not. I know the new Sterns use tranceivers which are totally different animals, so this is where your manual will come in handy. Get the part# and go from there.

Also any local electronic store will carry Infarred LED receivers. If you have a good electronics shop close by it may be a quicker trip.

I figured I'd give the original hardware one last try before I ordered some new parts. I took out the TX and RX boards, removed then re-soldered in the LED's. Put it back together. Aaaand... It works again.

Yay!
