You'd have to compare specs to see if your two are suitable alternatives, specifically the forward and max collector current, and max collector-emitter voltage - not to mention the actual physical dimensions need to be the same. But why not just order the part# shown on the schematics (QVE11233)?

Here's one in Canada. From what I know Digikey are quick to ship.

Here's the same part again at mouser:

Cause playoffs are Saturday and I like to not be down a game so if I can get the part from sayal that would be ideal

I figured as much that's why I mentioned Digikey has fast shipping, 2 to 3 days.
Best to call Sayal directly for part availability. Their Markham store is open tomorrow.

Others can chime in about compatibility.

Dont bother with Sayal, just order it from Digi if they have the correct part# and be done with it. They usually ship overnight if it's in stock.

Going with a sub is fine if you have the datasheet for the original and the alternative to compare, but if the original is available why go through the trouble?

Digi is out of stock and mouser wants $20 for shipping and it would have to be ups which means I would get bent over for brokerage as well.

Adam, if timing is still a concern (shipping from another country) you may want to try opto part# OPB804.

The opto part number you need rang familiar to me... and then I recalled that I had to order a similar opto years ago when rebuilding my TZ clock. The clock optos were special: part number QVE11233.0086. The suffix referred to special characteristics Williams needed in their design. This article touches on the subject: http://rec.games.pinball.narkive.com/0zH9J3cN/tz-clock-board-repair-bay-area-optos-ok.2 ... but coincidentally it mentions the OPB804 as an alternative to the QVE11233 opto Stern commonly uses.

Digikey looks to have the OPB804 in stock. For about $10 you may want to try it as a backup? Perhaps do some more reading on this one.

Everytime I've ordered from Newark shipping has been reasonable. (they are Digikey's main competition and are usually on par)

Got my parts, shipping was $8.

But it came in from the US.

So I'm sure a bill for Brokerage fees will show up on my doorstep from UPS in the next month or so :/

Nope, you won't. It's included in the $8. :D (Brokerage is always included in the cost of priority shipping w/ UPS or Fedex etc)

cool beans.

Now I have a 50/50 shot of putting the opto in the board right the first time as I didn't document what way the opto came out :p

Too bad I am not there to help. I could tell you which way I would put it in and then you would know for certain it went the other way.

Well that didn't work :x

Replaced the opto twice so I put it in both ways, replaced the transistor, still not working.

It's stuck on, I'm not really sure if it is supposed to be on or off.

I've checked and I have the 5v at the leads going into, but further than that I'm not sure what else to check.

I traced out continuity through all the traces just to make sure I didn't burn out a trace.

Not sure what else I should be checking.

It would have been cheaper to buy an entire new opto board then it has been to actually replace the components
