What's the point of pop bumpers?

I like them if I need to keep ball(s) tied up while I focus on a particular shot during multi-ball. I guess the most common use for them are building up your bonus multipliers via in lanes roll overs or sometimes certain modes require "x" number of hits to get an award so it sometimes helps to nudge to get a little bit more activity. If you find your balls taking too long to leave the pops maybe adjust your switches they aren't as sensitive.

Yeah no one likes a limp pop-bumper. I like to try and keep the ball in the pops as long as possible, usually to try and start the mode they're linked to. On otherwise fast games (like Iron Man) it's nice to have them just for the break!

Although too many pop bumpers gets pretty tedious *cough*Pat Lawlor*cough*

My Centaur and EBD pops are so sensitive I can probably go to the bathroom and come back before the ball gets back into play :D

The 'purpose' of them back in the day was likley just to create some animation and life to the ball. Playfields didn't have a ton of features back then so pops made the game more lively.
Today they are probably a lot less necessary, but they've sorta become part of the fabric of pinball.
I like when they are part of a mode or when a game uses a faeture like super jets/super pops. I love getting pops to a million points on IJ and then starting a 6 ball Well of Souls multi-ball.
